Below are Happy Tails dogs that have had their DNA tested
and the results. We have listed the whole litter, and noted which dog has
been tested. Assuming they all had the same Dad (an expert in canine
reproduction says it is really rare for there to be two Dad's), we assume they
all have the same make-up.
There are two types of tests available. There is a
home test that range in price from $40 - $79, and can be found on the internet
for ordering. Please note, though, that this test does not match up as
many breeds as the blood test. If you don't see what you think is your
dog's primary breed, you might want to go with the blood test.
The first three dogs below were all tested with the
"Wisdom" DNA test found at
www.wisdompanel.com
On that website, you can find a list of your neighborhood
vets that will do the blood test. Please call around for prices.
Right now (May 2008), we are getting prices of $130 to $185.
ZODIAC LITTER
Sparticus--first pictured (was Scorpio) was tested
using the "Wisdom Panel" DNA test. The test showed him
to be Border Collie, Chow, Leonberger, and Irish Terrier.
CARS LITTER
Lucky--first pictured (was BMW) was tested using the
"Wisdom" DNA test. The test showed him to be basically a collie/dachshund mix. He has border
collie, collie and sheltie, and a lot of dachshund.
REINDEER LITTER (December 07)
Lola--first pictured (was Dancer) was tested using the
"Wisdom" DNA test. The test showed her to be aAustralian
Shepherd, Sheltie, Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Scottish Deerhound, Vizla and
Havanese.
ZEKE (Z litter)
Zeke is a unique one. He was tested with the
Wisdom Panel also. Here was always the mystery. Zeke is from
the Z litter, but was a size larger than all the other puppies. We
were never sure if Zeke was really part of the litter. If there
are any other Z litter puppies out there, we would LOVE to see a picture
of you.
Zeke's Mom and Dad were not purebreds. Zeke is said to
have Dalmatian, Brittany Spaniel, and Nor. Elkhound in him.
Zeke's vet says well, I don't think so.........but why not?
Webmaster's note: There is a breed called the Nor. Buhund which
does look like Zeke. Because it is not tested for, it might be the
closest marker was the Nor. Elkhound. We never could figure out
Zeke. All we know is he is a wonderful dog. First is Zeke's
current picture, and then his baby pic, with the rest of the litter
pictured after that. Zeke is also in the picture gallery on
www.wisdompanel.com
EMMETT (Indian litter)
Emmett (was Comanche) was tested with the Wisdom
Panel. He was found to be Lab, Irish Setter, and Swiss
Mountain Dog. Emmett current picture is on the left, then his baby
picture, and then the rest of the litter.
NIC
Nic
was adopted six years ago. He is a very active what his Mom
'thought' was a Papillon/Border Collie/Terrier mix. His DNA says
he a lot of Cocker Spaniel (which is what everyone else said); Italian
Greyhound, and smaller bits of Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (explains
his ears instead of Papillion); and Aust. Terrier.
His Mom was in shock about the Greyhound, but after
days of reading, has realized that she can go down a long list of IG
habits, and Nic has them all! There were so many strange things
that he does that could never be explained.
The hard part is realizing that all four of these
breeds are hunters. Nic hunts birds whether he should be or not,
and squirrels and rabbits are hopeless. Now we know why.
