BUSINESSES THAT WE FEEL DESERVE FIVE STARS *****

Open the Yellow pages to Pets, and you will find hundreds of Groomers, Dog Schools, Boarding Kennels, Vets, and even Daycare for Dogs.  During the course of the last few years, we have had a chance to associate with many businesses.  Most were wonderful, but there are a few that for reasons stated just stand out as businesses we would like you to check out if you need any of these services.  Many new dog owners or owners looking for a change ask us, "well, where would you go?...."  If you aren't quite ready to take the plunge, and call these places, we ask that you email the person recommending that particular business.  We will get back to you quickly with more reasons for our recommendations.  If the business has a website, it is listed.  Please tell these businesses that you learned about them from us.  The businesses are in alphabetical order.

DAYCARE FOR DOGS

Recommended by Debbie (debbieandnic-rescue@yahoo.com).   Why?  Debbie didn't want a daycare where her dog would just be 'spending time' during the day.  She is home during the day, so to send her dog to a daycare, it had to be a special place.  This daycare not only allows dogs time to play together during the day, but consists of times during the day when each dog works on their obedience work at whatever level they are at.  The daycare is run by a couple that were previously instructors at Amiable Dog Training.  They have also earned ribbons in obedience from several obedience trials, so they are up to date on the ways to teach obedience.  So, if you don't have time to work on things from your obedience class, or want an experienced person to help shape up those forgotten skills, this is the place to go.  Make good use of that time your dog is just sitting around at home, and send him to daycare.

DOG SCHOOLS IN THE MILWAUKEE and WAUKESHA AREA:

1.  Action Dog Training

Recommended by Karen (pups2save@yahoo.com),  Why?  Karen has sent her dogs to this school, and feels it is just the perfect training for them.  They use a traditional way of training dogs.  After all, if it worked all those years, it will work again.  Many of our adopters have been to Action especially for their puppy class, and have great things to say about it.  The owners of the school often times serve as experts for us when we have training questions with rescue dogs.  Strongly recommended for folks in the greater Waukesha/New Berlin area.

Two Locations: Hwy 164 & Glendale Rd. In Waukesha; Highway J, south of Capitol Dr. in Pewaukee..

2.  Amiable Dog Training

Recommended by Debbie (debbieandnic-rescue@yahoo.com).  Why?  Four words:  Have you met Nicky?  Nic is Debbie's adopted dog.  She had, after a few attempts at training decided it was hopeless.  Nic is now a Canine Good Citizen and a Therapy Dog.  What happened?  He went to Amiable (and still does).  The teachers give attention to all the dogs, and make you feel like your dog is just as important as the best dog in the class.  They also, along with the other two schools, take on a traditional method of teaching.  Amiable also is nice enough to sell us their books at wholesale, so that any of their books we sell, we receive the profits.

3. Animal Motel

Recommended by Karen (pups2save@yahoo.com),  Why?  Karen feels this school is the right school for "no-nonsense" training, and it does exceptionally well with aggressive dogs.  She has, in past years, put dogs through training there.  Great for our people Northwest of Milwaukee.

GROOMERS - NAIL TRIMMING

Snipz 'N Tailz

Recommended by our rescue. Why?   Valerie, the owner of Snipz n' Tailz is a long time volunteer and foster home for the rescue.  She has opened her own grooming shop, and has the best groomers that understand dogs.  Special on Sunday for bath and nail cutting.  Call for appt during the week.  Open every day but Wednesday.  Cats also welcome

Snipz 'n Tailz  /  5121 W. Howard Ave., Milwaukee, 53220  /  414-727-2980

A Pet's Place/Finishing Touch

Recommended by Debbie (debbieandnic-rescue@yahoo.com),  Why?   Nic does NOT want his nails cut.  I can't do it, and most groomers can't do it.  The guy that owns "A Pet's Place" is able without too much problem to actually cut Nic's nails by himself.  The  groomers there are very good, and specialize in taking in older dogs and dogs with medical problems that a regular groomer may not want to deal with.  Nic has also been groomed there, and both Nic and the groomer are still alive and well.  Anyone that can groom Nic should be recommended!

THERAPY DOG CERTIFICATION

Recommended by Debbie (debbieandnic-rescue@yahoo.com).   Why?  Are you one of those people that has a few hours of free time each week, has a dog that likes people, and you would like to give something to the community by making people happy?  Therapy dogs are dogs that give emotional support (they are not service dogs that help physically handicapped).  Therapy dogs are used in assisted living facilities, nursing homes, and now even in the schools to increase the willingness of kids to read and write.  Nic (Debbie's dog) certified through this organization.

Pets Helping People

Phone: 1-262-785-8948.  email: ragstu@juno.com

Four weeks of classes (including orientation) are held at a nursing home in Brookfield once a week, with a test (and CGC test) being given the last day of class  Dogs and handlers have the opportunity to visit residents in a 'real' nursing home situation.

There is only a small donation required for the classes.

A pre-test is required before entering the class.  It includes a temperament test (unfortunately not all dogs are cut out for this work), plus the dog is expected to have the basic skills of heeling on leash, sit, down, stay, come.  It is a plus to already have your CGC, but it can be earned on test night along with the Therapy Dog test.  After testing, Pets Helping People will help you with a placement if you want, and also remains as your local organization for any support needed in the future.

VETS

1.  Bluemound Animal Hospital

Recommended by Debbie (debbieandnic-rescue@yahoo.com),  Why?   Debbie feels that they are a great vet clinic.  She has gone there for over 10 years with no complaints.  Their prices, along with Layton Animal Clinic are some of the lowest you will find in the Milwaukee area.  Other than mandatory shots just as DHPP and rabies, all other care is at the option of the client and discussed thoroughly before being done, so you can make the decision if this is what is right for you and your animal.

Bluemound Animal Hospital  /  16520 W. Bluemound (across from Brookfield Square), Brookfield, WI  53005  /  262-782-5805

2.  Layton Animal Hospital

Recommended by Happy Tails. (pups2save@yahoo.com).  Why?   Where would the rescue be without the kind vets and people at Layton Animal Hospital?  They take good care of our animals so that they are in the best possible health when you adopt them.  They love us, and we love them.  Their prices are more than reasonable, and they understand our rescue's philosophy and our dogs.
